Wow.
Tonight, on The Colbert Report, they profiled a lawsuit of a woman kicked out of her apartment because of alleged religious discrimination.
It turned out that she had pinned Peeps to her front door of her apartment, leading the management company to tell her she had to remove them because they were a health hazard.
Yes, Peeps.
Everyone’s favorite sign of the risen Lord.
Her lawyer, John Pineau, said the following:
By declaring war on Peeps, they have declared war on Easter.
Then, there was something about how this meant the apartment management company was discriminating based on her religion, specifically her love of Jesus.
Wow.
Pineau seems like an interesting guy. Here’s the claim on the front page of his Web site that makes me wonder what ethics rules exist for Colorado lawyers:
WINNING VERDICTS IN NEARLY EVERY CASE TRIED, OUR CLIENTS’ LIVES HAVE BEEN RESTORED QUIETLY OR WITH MEDIA COVERAGE AROUND THE WORLD. (303)XXX-XXXX.
Oh, here it is:
Rule 7.1. Communications Concerning A Lawyer’s Services
(a) A lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer’s services. A communication is false or misleading if it:
(1) contains a material misrepresentation of fact or law, or omits a fact necessary to make the statement considered as a whole not materially misleading;
(2) compares the lawyer’s services with other lawyers’ services, unless the comparison can be factually substantiated; or
(3) is likely to create an unjustified expectation about results the lawyer can achieve;
I’ll add or link the Colbert clip when I find it.

Sometimes I’m really glad to be a religious minority; we seem to feel more self-conscious about making total fools of ourselves. (Said the Hindu whose mom wanted an ice sculpture of Lord Ganesha at the wedding reception…)
