From the San Diego Union-Tribune:
Navy officials said Thursday that they have charged a sailor with murder in the June 30 shooting death of Seaman August Provost at Camp Pendleton.
Provost, 29, was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds about 3:30 a.m.at his guard post on the North County base. Naval officials have previously said that someone tried to light a fire at the guard shack, but did not confirm whether Provost was burned.
Navy officials said more information will be released at a news conference at 4 p.m. Thursday.
A day after the death, a sailor was detained as a “person of interest” in the investigation. That person had “ties to the commission of the crime” based on his own statements and physical evidence, Naval officials said.
More to come . . .
[UPDATE: From TXCN.com:
Johnathon C. Campos is charged with 16 crimes, including murder. The Navy says he also tried to solicit the murder of another sailor.
The sailor was arrested on July 1, but charges weren't filed until Thursday.
The Navy said Campos went on a crime spree in late May that included burglary and arson.
The Texas Cable News report was shared content that derived from Houston station KHOU.
Rod 2.0 has been covering this story extensively, so I imagine he'll have updates as the story develops.]
