Things Law Dork will be watching:
- The Congress: Whither hate crimes?
- The President: Monday’s White House LGBT event is upon us.
- The DOJ: The response to Gill — the GLAD case filed in Massachusetts — is coming. How will it differ from the Smelt brief? How will it look the same? [UPDATE: This is not coming this week. In fact, it's not coming until September. From GLAD:
The government’s response to our DOMA complaint will not be due June 29. Per agreement between the parties, GLAD will be filing an amended complaint in late July. It will include all of the tax plaintiffs (some of whom were not originally included for administrative reasons), reflect the fact that the passport plaintiffs’ issue has been resolved, and perhaps make some other changes. The amended complaint will be posted here. The government’s response will be due on September 18, or 45 days after the amended complaint is filed.]
- The Supreme Court: The final cases, including the Second Circuit’s “reverse-discrimination” Ricci case, will be coming this week.
- Ohio: Will the first vote for LGBT equality — on the EHEA — happen in Ohio’s House this week?
- Texas: What happened in Fort Worth, forty years to the night the cops messed with the wrong LGBT folks at the Stonewall Inn?
- California: The preliminary hearing in Perry — the federal Prop 8 challenge brought by lawyers Ted Olson and David Boies — in slated for July 2. Normally, this would likely be a non-issue but the stay sought in the suit means that July 2 could be quite important indeed.
